Approach

Tarot is a historical and still-evolving symbolic system. Seventy-eight cards carry imagery, structure, numbering, suits, correspondences, and several centuries of accumulated commentary — along with a great many artistic decisions made by particular people at particular times.

All of that can be studied. None of it produces one mandatory conclusion. Two careful readers can look at the same card, know the same history, and arrive somewhere different. That is a property of symbols, not a failure of rigour.

A reading in Arcanaform begins with looking. What do you notice first? What holds your attention? What seems connected to something else on the table? What looks different today than it did the last time?

These questions have no correct answers, and skipping them is always lawful. They come first because interpretation tends to arrive early and crowd out seeing. Observation and interpretation are related, but they are not the same act, and the order matters.

Arcanaform can show you what has been said about a card: documented visual symbolism, established interpretive traditions, historical context, conventions for reading a card reversed. Where a claim comes from a source, that source is named.

These are offered as lenses. Pick one up, look through it, put it down. A tradition that has been influential for a century is worth knowing about; it is not thereby correct about your reading. Arcanaform tries to be a good librarian and a poor oracle.

Arcanaform will preserve what you observed, surface context you might want, ask questions, and over time show you patterns in your own history. It will not tell you what a card means for your life, and it does not generate interpretations on your behalf.

This is a deliberate limit rather than a missing feature. An authoritative answer supplied by software would be the one thing capable of displacing the reflection the practice exists to produce.

A reading can begin with an intention instead of a question demanding a forecast. “Where is this friendship actually going?” and “What am I avoiding about this decision?” both give the encounter a context. Neither settles what it will find.

An intention shapes attention. It is a frame for the encounter rather than a request for an answer, and you are free to leave it empty.

A reading should not evaporate when it ends. Kept readings become a personal history: the cards you have met, how often, upright or reversed, in which positions, and what you wrote at the time.

This is the part that compounds. A single reading is an encounter. Thirty of them become evidence about how your relationship with a particular card has shifted — which is a thing you can only learn by looking back at your own words, not by being told.

The Tower is a canonical card. The particular Tower you are looking at is one artist's account of it. Those are related, and they are not identical.

Arcanaform currently ships a single public reader deck — Arcanaform Core — and is built so that a second representation would not fracture the first. Historical voices (such as Papus and Waite) appear in Study as sources, not as alternate decks you draw with. A future reader might study The Tower through this deck, through another artist's, or through one they made themselves — with the imagery described separately for each, and the canonical card remaining one card throughout. No artwork, including the familiar Rider-Waite-Smith imagery, is tarot itself.

Tarot has genuine divinatory traditions, and Arcanaform has no interest in pretending otherwise or in arguing anyone out of them. That history is part of what there is to study.

What Arcanaform will not do is assert supernatural prediction as established fact, in either direction. It is built around symbolic encounter, reflection, and your own meaning-making, because those are the parts a piece of software can actually support honestly. What you take the cards to be doing remains yours to decide.
